HISTORY

The Monticello Utility Commission was established by a City of Monticello ordinance on May 5th, 1962. The first water treatment plant was located on Fair Street. The source water was from groundwater wells and the water was stored in a single tower. The facility did not service much of the community, but it was the beginning of a treatment facility of a much larger size. Our current water treatment facility was built in 1968. The plant has a 4 million gallons per day capacity. This facility serves clean drinking water to over 7,000 households, which computes over 19,000 residents of Wayne County.

Our first wastewater treatment facility was located at the old Wayne County High School. Again, this facility did not reach much of the community. Our current wastewater treatment plant was built in 1984. Its capacity is 700,000 gallons per day. We provide sewer services to over 2,000 households within the city limits, which computes to 5,200 residents of Monticello.
